RL Winston Rod Co.
The Winston name dates to 1929, when San Francisco fishermen Robert Winther and Lew Stoner purchased what was the Western Fishing Rod Company. The bamboo rods these men began building, which immediately began breaking distance records in casting tournaments, became known as “Winstons”, in a contraction of their two surnames. RL Winston Rod Company led the industry in bamboo rod design through the 1930s and 1940s, and in the 1950s, became one of the first firms to make use of a new material: fiberglass. By 1975, Winstons were being built of the new cutting-edge material – graphite. In 1976, the company moved from San Francisco to Twin Bridges, Montana, “in order to be near the world-class trout fishing of the Beaverhead, Big Hole, and Jefferson Rivers." In the last decade, RL Winston has been at the forefront of rod design and construction, just as in the early 20th century, with boron/graphite composites occupying a central role in contemporary rod-building efforts.| Winston Boron II-MX | Winston Boron II-T | Winston LT Rods |
