Sage Manufacturing has been a fixture on Washington’s Bainbridge Island since it opened its doors with six employees in 1980. Initially called Winslow Rod Company, Sage would dramatically change the landscape of fly rod manufacturing during the 1980s, more or less inventing high-performance, fast-action rods. By decade’s end, they had become the leading fly rod company in the world. Sage’s industry-leading innovation continued without halt during the 1990s and 2000s, as the company ventured into fly reel and line design, as well. Though Sage has grown to a firm of 175 employees, it still occupies the same location on Bainbridge, where all Sage rods are still made. Through almost thirty years of history, Sage has become known for forward-thinking, technology-driven research and development, sophisticated manufacturing methods and materials science, and an uncompromising, almost impetuous desire to redefine what anglers can expect from their equipment.
