I made fly rods for a decade before
acquiring the Gary H. Howells rod shop. In that time, I learned how
to design a bamboo fly rod to function as a superb fishing tool. This
design work was done empirically, by building and field testing and
then building another. This background was invaluable to me when I
acquired Gary Howells fly rod shop, because it has helped me work
with Gary's tapers and recognize the true greatness of bamboo fly
fishing rods. I now use this scientific method in everything I do in
making a bamboo fly fishing rod, keeping notes about changes made and
the results obtained, just as Gary Howells did. This method is
laborious and time consuming, but the results are clear in every R.K
