Leland on Scott: SC Bamboo 365-2 Fly Rod

This 6'5" 3 weight Ramanauskas bamboo fly fishing rod is an incredibly efficient  tool for casting small flies accurately around and under trees and bushes. A joy to cast, it is light, smooth, and surprisingly powerful when called upon. This small rod derives its unusual casting properties from the hands of master builder Bernard Ramanauskas, who has developed a special method for node stabilization in his cane. The polymerization of the lignin within the node increases strength without adding weight. This, coupled with a power-directing, hollow-built butt section, contributes to a bamboo rod taper that casts like no other.

Leland on Scott Bamboo Fly Rods:

The boys at Scott are into bamboo fly rods!
No matter how far you run, you just can't hide from your past! Although Scott Fly Rods' past isn't really steeped with bamboo fly rod tradition, it is rich with providing the trout angler the best fly fishing rod possible. Scott continues this tradition by partnering with one of the world's top split cane rod makers. One doesn't just start making bamboo fly rods, and Scott Fly Rod Company knows that. They've joined forces with award winning cane fly rod master builder Bernard Ramanauskas to bring you some of the finest bamboo rods found anywhere. Mr. Ramanauskas has provided Scott with powerful, yet very smooth casting and progressive bamboo fly rod tapers. What this means to you is these are not the split cane rods of old; they're lightweight with a crisp action to deliver your fly where you want it go, not where the wind tries to push it! These rods feature hollow-built swelled butts and resin-reinforced nodes with light handmade nickel silver ferrules from master ferrule maker Hariki. Strong, efficient, elegant; everything you could ask for in a small to medium stream, light-line bamboo rod. Leland is the largest volume Scott Dealer in the U.S., but even we have difficulty keeping these beautiful rods from Bernard in stock. So jump on 'em, while you can.

Leland on Scott Fly Rods:

Founded in 1973 by Harry Wilson, Scott quickly became known for their fine fiberglass fly rods. However, very soon, they began to experiment with graphite. Within a few years Scott developed, their signature, tapered hollow internal ferrule. In the late 1970's Scott's pioneering graphite rod, designed specifically for salmon and steelhead, was introduced. Further, they initiated one of the first true quality control rating systems for rod blanks. The result was greater consistency in rods throughout the production process.

Scott is a company whose history is filled with firsts. They were the first rod maker to introduce a five-piece fiberglass rod. They began to experiment with graphite as early as any rod maker. Scott was the first rod company to successfully develop and sell multi-piece graphite rods; and the list goes on and on. This foresight has lead to a number of developments in production and design that has made them one of today's industry leaders. The first Scott series to feature four piece rods in 2-12 weight sizes is the S3 series, which soon lead to the S3S and now the S4 fly rods.

The S3 represented the best tip flex rod Scott has ever made. Given the overwhelming success of the S3 the team at Scott added a saltwater series to the line. Having gathered input from dealers and pros alike, this series will no doubt find itself battling some of the world's ultimate game fish. The S3S rods load as quickly as any rod out there. They are deadly accurate which is good for the angler and bad for the bonefish. This series features the patented Scott ARC reinforcement; this addition helps the angler land those trophy fish you see in all the magazines. All of these developments and design have lead to the design of "new" best tip flex rod the S4 fly rod.

Scott on SC Bamboo Rod Notes:

"Bamboo. Unless you're a panda, just the mention of it conjures up visions of great granddad, creel over his shoulder, casting to trout in a clear cold river. If your noble ancestor was very lucky, in his hand was one of the exceptional rods that combined performance and artistry.

Fast forward and meet the new Scott SC Series bamboo rods. Continue to enjoy that vision of great granddad, but make no mistake, you're holding a rod that would make him truly envious. We've partnered with Bernard Ramanauskas, award winning master cane builder and innovator, fly fishing fanatic and guide, to bring you some remarkable split cane rods.

Each proprietary six-sided model features unique taper designs, hollow built blanks, swells, and a host of other tricks for some of the lightest and best balanced rods around. Actions are crisp and the rods cast a very flat line. No need to justify owning a cane rod just because it's beautiful or expensive;now you can also revel in how well it performs.

Blanks are flamed a medium cognac color and are joined with light weight Super Swiss nickel silver ferrules. Spalted maple wood inserts with engraved nickel silver cap and ring hardware are hand finished and blued. Wraps are flawless in translucent silk with burgundy silk trim. Blued Snakebrand Guides with select real agate stripping guides in nickel silver frames round out the components."

Scott on Why Bamboo:

"Great fly rods are made from a variety of materials
. Whether built from graphite, fiberglass or bamboo, the key is bringing together material selection, design, and craftsmanship. Each material has its own characteristics, and bamboo can be used to create rods that stand the test of time for true performance and sublime beauty."

Scott on The Truth

"70% stronger! 40% lighter!" All made possible through the magic of another random collection of letters and numbers.

Great fly rods aren't great because they feature the latest 'exclusive' material that only exists in the minds of clever marketing departments.

Great fly rods are forged by commitment, experience, and passion. It takes commitment to source the right materials and components even if they're a lot more expensive. It takes commitment to craftsmanship and top quality even if it takes much more time. Our rods are handcrafted by people who love to fish as much as you do, and they're put together with the know-how that comes from forty years of design and rod building experience.

Of course materials are important, but that's just the beginning. The full story is in the details, and how those details are brought together, and it has a whole lot to do with the people who make your rods.

And that's the truth.
