Leland on Beulah Surf Rods
Beulah was the first company to manufacture and market a full line of switch rods, way back in 2005,
and as the switch models gained popularity on trout and steelhead
rivers around the world, it didn’t take long for surf casters to
discover the benefits of using the extra length of an 11’ two-hander to
their advantage in the surf. While the surf casting potential of switch
rods was obvious, the actions of the rods, designed primarily for roll
and spey casting, just weren’t fast enough to achieve maximum distance
and line speed with an overhead casting stroke…
…And in comes the Beulah Surf Series! Built with ultra fast, strong, lightweight blanks, and offered in 7/8, 8/9, and 9/10 line weights, these 11’ two-handed surf rods are built to launch
big wind resistant flies to large predatory fish. If you find yourself
in the middle of an onshore blitz, or just blind casting, these compact
cannons will allow you to reach out beyond the breakers with a
powerful, yet comparatively effortless, two-handed overhead casting
stroke.
When most people think of Beulah Surf Rods, they immediately think
striper fishing, but these rods will excel in any situation where you
need to launch big flies, serious distances, to fast moving
predators with an overhead cast. Whether you’re chasing roosters,
blues, GTs, or, of course, stripers, there is a Beulah Surf Rod to get you in the game.
Leland on Beulah
Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.
Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.
Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.

Beulah on Beulah Surf Fly Fishing Rods
If you have ever been fortunate enough to encounter an on
shore blitz you know the absolute thrill of surf casting. Everything happens at
once, birds crashing from above, boils of predators below and bait fish in a
frenzy trying to escape. Everything comes down to that brief moment and how
ready you are for it.
Whether you are blind casting or trying to reach a shore blitz, Beulah Fly Rods
has three new Surf specific fly rods to help you cast further and easier.
Beulah 11' ft Surf fly rods in 7/8, 8/9, and 9/10 wt are fast action two
handers designed to cast long and fast with half the effort of single hand
rods. These are not Spey rods being used for surf casting, they are light fast
action/fast recovery rods with progressive tapers to load fast and handle big
flies, and a variety of lines.
These rods are built light and crisp and sized to handle a variety of size fish
and make it fun to catch whether fishing for schoolie stripers from a coastal
stream in Maine, GT's at Christmas, roosterfish in Baja, and everything in
between.
How do these differ from current Switch offerings? Very Fast
Action/Fast Recovery blanks butt to tip designed for moving large wind
resistant flies, aggressive and advanced line tapers to big fish. Big flies,
heavy tips and tough/windy situations that seem to accompany saltwater fishing
environments won’t be an issue for this new 11’ three rod series!
Beulah on Beulah
Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides, fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create high performance products that could compete with anything on the market and offer them at a fair price. Judging by the response, we have done just that and more.
From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish, even if if was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing situation, we started with a full
range of fly rods including single hand, salt, spey and a complete line
of original switch rods. These are now considered our Classic Series, a proven line of rods that are engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and appearance.
When our switch rods hit the market there was little to nothing
available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations, so we
took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly line to go with it.
As graphite technology took the leap to all-carbon scrim, Beulah Fly Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum Series.
What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed into a
full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response to
our initial Platinum spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on our hands.
Our marketing plan has always been based around true glass-roots efforts and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you we get to do what we love to do. We'll never lose sight of that fact. Here's to the next five years...
