Leland on the Beulah Classic 13'6" 8/9 Spey Rod

As any seasoned steelheader will tell you, anadromous fish are some of the most special organisms on earth. Swinging flies for salmon and steelhead takes dedication, focus and patience, but it also takes an appreciation for all the aspects of a fishing day that don’t necessarily add up to putting a fish on the bank. Fish a rod like the Beulah Classic 8/9 13’6” Spey, and you’re going to enjoy every cast you make in a day. This powerful Spey rod is a tip-lifting machine. When fitted with a Skagit-style shooting head, it can deliver ordinance of any proportion with little effort.

Leland on Specifications

As the largest rod in Beulah's Classic Series, the 13'6" 8/9 Spey is built for big water, big tips, and bigger flies. Swinging sink-tips is one of the most technical forms of fly fishing, and to do it right, you best use a rod that’s built to the task. The Beulah Classic 8/9 13’6” Spey rod is built atop a hulking, super-stable blank that loads deeply during the cast to power heavy flies and tips the full distance. With Beulah’s uniquely constructed cork handle, featuring a slender tip grip and rings of burly composite material, the 13’6” 8/9 feels great in hand and is super durable. This rod represents an excellent choice for steelhead, kings, Atlantics and sea-run browns.

Leland on Beulah Classic Spey Rods

Beulah’s Classic Series of Spey Rods, formerly known as the Guide Series, is a proven collection of capable two-handers born and bred for four seasons of fishing in Southern Oregon’s steelhead country.

The Classic Series of Spey Rods makes use of time-honored construction technology: high modulus graphite reinforced with durable fiberglass scrim. Under their original identity as the Guide Series, the Classic Speys built a reputation for durability and consistency within the unpredictable environment of a guide boat.

Beulah Classic Spey Rods have a ‘regressive’ action optimized for all types of Spey casting. They load deeply into the blank for hefting big tips and flies, but maintain a snappy tip for tight loops and high line speed when you need to present your fly with precision. These Spey rods will deliver the goods in any fishing scenario, whether that means slinging a size 8 Purple Peril on a floating line or delivering an 800 grain sinktip and a ¼ oz. worm weight.

Leland on Beulah

Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.

Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.

Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.

Beulah on the Classic 13'6" 8/9 Spey Rod

13’6” 8/9 spey: There are still many shops, owners, guides and shop employees that stand tough on the idea that a fisher’s first spey rod should be between 13’0” and 14’0” long. Even though the “Spey game” has drastically shifted towards shorter rods in the past couple of years, this is still a sound practice. Folks new to the two-handed rod will take a season or two developing the muscle memory and technique that differs from single hand fishing to become sound, efficient two-hand casters even in tough fishing environments. There is definitely forgiveness in length making this a great first choice stick. Many guys out there just feel comfortable and enjoy casting a longer stick. Call it old school, traditional, ties them to their non-Scottish ancestry…Whatever, tons of folks like casting longer spey rods which is o.k., legal and prudent! Our Beulah 13’6” 8/9 is a sound choice for a go anywhere medium/large to large size summer Steelhead stream and makes a terrific go to winter Steelhead rod.

This is a progressive taper with a fast action that excels with Scandinavian and Skagit line choices. With the extra length at 13’6” line choices also drastically open up with mid belly lines like Airflo Delta, Delta Long, Rio Windcutters and long belly lines like NextCast  75,85 and 95.

USE OF ROD:
This will be a great choice for all medium/large and larger size bodies of water for summer Steelhead, and an excellent go to choice for a dedicated winter Steelhead rod.

ACTION:
Progressive Taper: Fast Action/Fast Recovery

Beulah on Beulah

Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides, fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create high performance products that could compete with anything on the market and offer them at a fair price. Judging by the response, we have done just that and more.

From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish, even if if was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing situation, we started with a full range of fly rods including single hand, salt, spey and a complete line of original switch rods. These are now considered our Classic Series, a proven line of rods that are engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and appearance.

When our switch rods hit the market there was little to nothing available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations, so we took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly line to go with it.

As graphite technology took the leap to all-carbon scrim, Beulah Fly Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum Series. What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed into a full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response to our initial Platinum spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on our hands.

Our marketing plan has always been based around true glass-roots efforts and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you we get to do what we love to do. We'll never lose sight of that fact. Here's to the next five years...
