leland's Bass Fly Fishing Techniques, Step One

Welcome to the Leland Sonoma Fly Fishing Ranch and to our topwater bass school! After Step 1 of this specialized bass fly fishing school, you will know how to fly fish for bass on your own or with a guide.

You will be introduced to the bass fly fishing techniques needed to successfully fly fish in warmwater on the surface. Under the right conditions, both largemouth and smallmouth bass will erupt on a popping bug, jump clear of the water, and put a serious bend in graphite. It doesn't get any better!

Why Bass? In addition to heart-stopping surface takes and dogged fights, bass thrive in all but the coldest waters offering fly fishermen quality angling for wild fish just about anywhere. Furthermore, the most successful bass anglers cast efficiently with great accuracy, cover productive water thoroughly, and employ good line management skills. Every fly angler can benefit from learning more about how to fly fish for bass and will improve his or her overall fly fishing success by spending time on a bass pond! So the question is really not why bass, but why not bass?

Take a Half-Day Guided Trip with Leland's Jim Andras

Distinguished fly fishing guide and instructor Jim Andras will be leading Step One Bass graduates on half-day bass fishing excursions throughout the summer of 2011. These half-day outings allow bass fly fishing students to apply what they've learned at the Sonoma Ranch to an in-field fishing day with Jim, the ultimate companion for a beautiful summer morning in wine country.

Leland's Jim Andras

Having guided in Russia, Mongolia, Alaska and Chile, Jim Andras now plies the waters of northern California and southern Oregon. Dry in humor and humble in demeanor, Jim commands a loyal following of repeat clients year after year, but is always looking to share his love of fly fishing with new folks. Jim is kind, gentle, and pretension-free, and his trips in the northern Bay Area represent the ideal next step after one of our intro classes at the Ranch.
