Leland on R.L. Winston Rod Company
Craftsmanship, craftsmanship, craftsmanship.... Winston has built one of fly fishing's best reputations through an unmatched attention to detail. R.L Winston is one of the oldest rod manufacturers in the world,
and for good reason. Founded in 1929, the company was located on 6th
street in downtown San Francisco, just blocks away from Leland. Raised in the Bay Area, Winston evolved on the waters and casting ponds that helped establish the area as a fly fishing mecca.
Throughout the company's history they have stayed true to the idea that there will always be a market for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship.
Soon after the company's inception their reputation as a high quality
rod company blossomed. Within only a few years their rods were being
used in tournaments throughout the United States. Winston bamboo rods quickly became known as
some of the finest anywhere. Bamboo rods made in the San Francisco shop
have become some of the most sought after in the world. Although the
majority of rods produced today are graphite, they still manufacture
bamboo.
In the 1950's the company began to develop fly rods made of
fiberglass. Created by one of Winston's true innovators, Doug Merrick,
the 'glass' rods produced during that time have become
collectables. Today, in an effort to enable the modern fly
fisherman to taste what once was, the company reintroduced a fiberglass
series of rods, the Winston Retro.
Winston has managed to employ their decades of experience
building rods in the company's current rod designs. Maintaining the
soul that has always been present in their rods, Winston produces some
of the industry's finest graphite rods using the industry's most advanced materials. While at the same time maintaining the soul that
has always been present in their rods. Today, Winston offers rods for
every fishing application. They currently have over nine separate rod
series. The Winston line can accommodate the needs and wants of every
angler. Series such as the LT and WT represent some of the best mid and full flex rods available, where as the Boron IIx and Boron II-MX will impress anglers seeking a tip flex rod. Regardless of the model, if its soul your after, a Winston will deliver.
R.L. Winston on Winston
“Permit. Brown Trout. Tarpon. Steelhead. Dorado.
Smallmouth Bass. Bonita. No matter what species you’re after, no matter
what type of water you’re fishing, there’s a Winston rod designed to
help you achieve angling success.
Our design philosophy is simple: create fly rods that “fish” extraordinarily well
across the range of distances they were intended to cast. To that end,
we utilize a variety of materials and rod actions to meet the fishing
needs, skills and person al preferences of a wide range of anglers.
[In Winston’s line-up] you’ll find many different fly rods to choose from.
Small stream rods. Rods suited for big Western rivers. Powerful
saltwater rods. Longer rods for stillwater and steelhead applications.
Two -handed rods for Spey casting. There are fast-action rods, medium-action rods and slow-action rods. Rods made with boron. Rods made with graphite. Rods made with bamboo.
Suffice it to say, there’s a Winston that’s perfect for you.”
“Over
the years, Winston has used many different materials to build our rods,
including bamboo, fiberglass, various types of graphite and now, our
second generation boron/graphite composite.
And while a
primary goal of the company has been to constantly improved upon and
evolve the fly rod itself, one thing has never changed: our dedication to making not just the best performing fly rods in the world, but the most beautiful.
At
Winston, we take a great deal of pride in the quality and craftsmanship
of our rods. Pick up an LT-5, for example, and you’ll be holding a rod
with a flawless finish, precisely aligned snake and stripping guides, a
grip that’s been sanded by hand and reel seat made with the finest
components and engraved with the Winston logo. All Winston rods undergo
multiple inspections for quality, and all come with an unconditional
lifetime guarantee.”
"A Winston Is More Than A Fly Rod. It’s the best fishing companion one can ever have."
"Why
are anglers so passionate about Winston fly rods? We believe it has to
do with many things, from our history and traditions to the care and
craftsmanship that go into the building of each rod. But perhaps the
most important reason of all is, when Winston owners start working a
good-looking riffle, or Suddenly spot a fast-moving bonefish that
requires a pinpoint cast, they’ll have the confidence in knowing they
possess the best-performing fly rods in the world.
Skilled in trickery and deception, the con man practices his craft.
For
some, it’s countless hours spent at the tying bench, laboring over
miniscule midge patterns. For others, it’s being out on the lawn,
practicing double hauls and roll casts until they are second nature.
For still others, it’s studying the water intently when they arrive at
a stream, looking for hatches and watching for bank feeders. These are
anglers who are serious about their fly fishing and are keen to have
that pass ion rewarded in the best way possible: a spot-on cast, A
solid strike and a bent Winston rod. "
"A 79-Year Tradition of innovation, craftsmanship and hoodwinking fish.
In
1929, Robert Winther and Lew Stoner began building bamboo rods in San
Francisco. Their company was known as “R.L. Winston,” a combination of
the two men’s last names, and the rods they made soon earned acclaim
for their innovative design and exceptional craftsmanship. As the word
spread, “Winstons” quickly became the choice of serious anglers around the world who wanted smooth casting; powerful, very accurate rods that offered superb touch and feel.
Since
1976, we’ve built our rods in the small town of Twin Bridges, Montana,
within casting distance of the Beaverhead River. And while materials,
technology and rod-building methods have changed significantly over the
years, the characteristics that endeared us to anglers long ago
continue to be cherished by Winston owners today: groundbreaking design, unmatched quality and, of course, superior performance on fly waters worldwide.
Pick
up a Winston, and you’ll be holding a rod with a flawless finish,
precisely aligned snake and stripping guides, a grip that’s been sanded
by hand and a reel seat made with the finest components and engraved
with the Winston logo. Fish with one, and you’ll experience the
remarkable “feel” that comes from a rod that is lightweight, balanced
and smooth. All Winston rods undergo multiple inspections for quality,
and all come with an Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee."
