Leland on the Beulah Tonic Spey Head
Some of our favorite rivers have
unique geology, making for tough wading, good habitat, and difficult fishing. When you have to
get your presentation down to where the fish are in a hurry, you'd do well to recruit help in the form of the
Beulah Tonic Spey line, a high-diameter, Skagit-style line that makes throwing heavy tips and giant flies a breeze. The Beulah Tonic Fly Line is available only as a shooting head, which means
anglers require a section of shooting line to bridge the Skagit head to the backing.

PERFORMANCE PROFILES
The short rear taper of the Tonic Shooting Head defines the bullet
shaped loop as soon as it leaves the water. Once airborne, the
condensed large diameter front taper turns the line over allowing for
the concentrated mass in the tip of the line to zero in on its target.
Bull's Eye!
LINE FEATURES
The Tonic features a Supple line material for low to no memory, and
ease of line management in all weather conditions. This line features a
Pumpkin Orange color, allowing for maximum visibility in a wide variety
of conditions. The front and back of the head feature factory welded
loops for easy change up between heads and tips.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
From light intermediate tips with summer flies to the heavy winter tips
and large flies, the Beulah Tonic will get it done with style and
grace.

Leland on Beulah
Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.
Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.
Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.
Beulah on the Beulah Tonic Spey Line
Beulah Tonic Heads are redefining Skagit casting in terms of ease, control and efficiency for today's Switch and Spey rods. Compact and powerful, our new Tonic is the big brother to our Elixir line series. Engineered for control by placing the majority of the lines mass where it best suits the rod for casting. A condensed front taper ending with a large tip diameter positively transfers energy turning over stubborn long/heavy sink tips and large/heavy flies. Beulah Tonic Heads are designed to match each of our Switch and Spey rods. With nine line sizes to choose from, these will be an excellent performance match for fall and winter sink tip fishing situations. For lighter leaders and flies consider our Elixir Line.
Beulah Tonic fly lines are designed to be just over 2 times rod length and allow for sink tips in a wide full range of lengths and grain weights along with moderate to large and heavy flies to be presented with ease and grace. These lines are generally designed to cast with sustained anchor techniques including the Snap “T” or “C” and Double Spey. With the right touch, splash and go casts like Single Speys and Snake Rolls are not at all out of the question.
How is Beulah Tonic different from most other Skagit style lines? Many Skagit style lines are designed with the majority of the profile as large diameter without much taper to move the mass of sink tips and large/heavy flies. Crude, effective, but,.....not pretty. Beulah’s new Tonic can be dissected into four areas of line profile to improve casting, control and line flight: Short steep rear taper that connects to your running line allows for the line to quickly collapse into bullet shaped tight loops. The rear taper then melds into the belly or body of the line which carries the majority of the lines weight (in grains) close to your rod tip allowing for instant load, and the ability to work tight casting spaces. From there, the lines feature a condensed continuous taper to a large diameter tip which connects to and handles all of your sink tip and large or heavy fly needs.
Beulah Tonic lines are matched to each of our Switch and Spey models starting with the 5/6 Switch giving you a total of nine different options to choose from. Five grain matched lines covering each Beulah Switch rod will be a great match for all rods 11’0” and shorter. Four grain matched lines for each Beulah Spey.
Beulah on Beulah Fly Lines
The Beulah family of fly lines was created with the desire to take
the guess work out of rod and line match up. The Beulah Elixir fly line
is our Scandinavian style spey line, designed to cast tight loops with
minimal effort in tight quarters. The Elixirs are a joy to cast from
your first six foot dump at the top of the run to 80'+ lasers when
distance is necessary! The Beulah Elixir is the perfect choice for dry
line, light and moderate sink tip needs for all summer and early fall Spey excursions.
The Beulah Tonic fly line is redefining Skagit style casting in terms
of ease, control and efficiency for today's switch and spey rods. The
tonic is designed compact and powerful with a front taper ending with a
large diameter tip for positive energy transfer in turning over heavy
tips and flies.
Beulah's Serum beach and surf lines are designed to match the extreme
conditions encountered when casting flies into the salt. The Serum was
designed with an aggressive front taper to accommodate large flies and
windy conditions. The 30-32' head length matches perfectly with faster
action two hand rods 11-12' as well as fast action single hand fly rods.
Beulah on Beulah Fly Rods
Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a
lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides,
fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to
find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create
high performance products at a fair price. Judging by the response, we
have done just that and more.
From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish
even if it was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing
situation, we started with a full range of fly rods including single
hand, salt, spey and a complete line of original switch rods. These are
now considered our Classic series, a proven line of rods that are
engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and
appearance. When our switch rods hit the market there was little to
nothing available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations
so we took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines
specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and
spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just
choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly lines to
go with it.
As graphite technology took the leap to all carbon scrim, Beulah Fly
Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum
Series. What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed
into a full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response
to our initial spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on
our hands.
Our marketing plan has always been based around true grass roots efforts
and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and
people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a
part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you, we get to do what
we love to do. We’ll never lose sight of that fact. Here’s to the next
five years…
