Leland on Scientific Anglers Fly
Fishing Products
Scientific Anglers Fly Fishing Products
was founded in 1945 by fellow anglers Leon Martuch, Clare Harris, and
Paul Rottiers in Midland, Michigan. They developed the first modern,
plastic coated fly line in 1952, replacing silk fly lines which had
been in use for well over 100 years. In 1954, Scientific Anglers Fly
Fishing Products introduced the Air Cel, widely considered the first
modern floating fly lines. Scientific Anglers' development of 3M
Microballoons in 1959 revolutionized the way that fly lines float and
is the standard technology by which all manufacturers float their
lines today. 3M, then known as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
Company, acquired Scientific Anglers Fly Fishing Products in 1973.
Scientific Anglers wrote the book on
early modern fly line development, with research and development
resources way beyond the means of other major fly line makers that we
usually see on the shelves.

Applications:
The
ideal multi-purpose line for saltwater; Top performance across a wide
range of casting needs; Low memory for all weather conditions; High,
hollow-core floatation helps wading anglers keep running line above
weeds and coral
Taper characteristics:
6-9
wt. lines with medium head for excellent distance and accuracy; 10-14
wt. lines with shorter head for quicker casts with larger flies and
heavier leaders; Larger tip diameter and short front taper provide
extra power to deliver large flies; Small overall diameter reduces wind
resistance; Excels in wind without compromising delivery
Head
design minimizes false casting with large flies; Compound taper head
turns over flies under the most demanding saltwater conditions; Larger
diameter running line reduces memory, tangles; Horizon color, although
visible to anglers, blends into the sky and sea to become less visible
to skittish fish
Core:
Softer, more supple braided multifilament nylon for less memory in all water conditions, see next page
Hollow core traps air for ultimate floatation
Coating:
Special higher-density 3M saltwater PVC formulated with patented AST – Advanced Shooting Technology:
Highly resilient coating provides the durability required for harsh saltwater use
Scientific Anglers on AST Technology
"The 'dry-slick' coating that enhances every aspect of floating line performance.
Integrated
within the line coating, amazing AST - Advanced Shooting Technology -
has redefined fly-line performance by achieving a unique 'dry'
slickness that keeps the line permanently slick and continuously clean.
Try an AST line just once, and nothing else will do.
Floats Higher
The
dry slickness of AST prevents dirt and algae from clinging to line,
which means line stays cleaner and floats higher for longer intervals.
Shoots Better
AST
is lightning slick for the fastest, smoothest shooting of your life.
With AST, line shoots virtually friction-free through the guides and
keeps on doing it for the life of the line - without dressing.
Casts Farther
Line
shoots through the guides with minimum impediment for exceptional
distance. And cleaner AST lines fly through the air with minimum
resistance.
Stays Cleaner
Unlike
silicone-coated lines and dressed lines, the AST coating doesn't give
dirt and algae anything to cling to, so line stays free of debris that
can ruin performance.
Lasts Longer
The
AST coating is inherently more durable. And because line stays so clean
and free of debris with AST, the line itself is significantly less
prone to wear and corrosion.
Mastery Series Floating Lines,
all with AST, are comprised of a PVC mixture with 3M Microballoons™ and
the dry AST compound right to the core. Integral within the coating,
AST will never wear off or wash off. It's always slick.
AST-formulated slow-sinking lines
use a delicate balance of PVC mixed with the dry AST compound. This
unique combination makes our Bonefish, Tarpon, and Striped Bass tapers
the best-performing slow-sinking lines in fly fishing."
