Leland on the Beulah Platinum 11" 8 weight Switch Rod

There is a reason why the 8 weight is the best selling switch rod weight for steelhead.  If you could only own one switch or compact spey rod for steelhead, this Beulah Platinum 11' 8 weight Switch Rod is an excellent choice.  Whether you are plying the West's famed steelhead drainages, or stepping down the banks of a Great Lakes tributary, this rod will feel right at home.  With its crisp, fast recovery, this 8 weight will throw darts with a scandi head , but when the water cools down and the sink tip game begins, this rod really comes into its own.  Pair it with a compact skagit head and 10' of T14 with authority, and enjoy searching out a fresh winter grab.

Leland on Specifications

Whether you are skating bulky dries, or swinging heavy intruders, the Beulah 11' 8 weight Platinum Switch will deliver the goods with the combination of proven performance and custom look that makes a Beulah, a Beulah.  At 11' in length, in a line weight suited to cover heavier-duty steelhead fishing scenarios, and a blank taper designed to deliver fast, tight loops from an overhead, roll, or spey cast, this switch rod will be a powerful addition to your quiver.  The AAAA Grade Portuguese cork handles with cork burl ring highlights lend a refreshing, custom-looking aesthetic to a rod that, like all Beulah rods, is engineered and built with function and fishability at the top of the priority list.  If you are looking for an all-purpose compact two-hander for steelhead, look no further than the 8 weight Beulah Platinum Switch.

Leland on Beulah Switch Rods

Switch rods are a relatively new phenomenon in fly fishing, and for this we have to thank, in large part, Beulah Fly Rods. Beulah was the first company to manufacture and market a full line of switch rods, way back in 2005.

Today, Beulah’s commitment to switch rods is just as strong. In the smaller line weights, these compact two handed fly rods enable anglers to fish trout on the swing – the original way to trout fish, after dapping – while the larger line weights offer anglers all the benefits of spey rods, in tighter quarters or on smaller water. Developed on the legendary rivers of southern and central Oregon – Rogue, Deschutes, Metolius, Williamson – Beulah switch rods are function-forward and task-specific.

Why fish a switch rod? To cover more water, and more water types, with less effort. Though Beulah switch rods can be used with one hand or two, with indicators or dries, here at Leland we like to think of them as compact spey rods, and we get the greatest satisfaction out of fishing the swing with these capable two handers. Aesthetically flawless, and fitted with the finest components, Beulah switch rods will enrich any day on the water.

Leland on Beulah

Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.

Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.

Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.

Beulah on Beulah Platinum Switch 8110-4 Fly Rods

The 11’ 8 wt Platinum switch can easily be considered a short Spey rod that is light enough to single hand cast, or nymph all day long. This rod is just about as fun as it gets with a two hand rod, possessing the power of most Spey rods and lightness and feel in hand of a single hand rod.

The 11' 8wt Switch rod is the big brother to our 10’8” 7 also featuring a deep loading, slightly regressed action and a fast recovery. This rod is easy to make friends with and is going to be the one you can call on for all Steelhead/light Salmon duty and crosses over into winter fishing on all medium to larger rivers.  This rod like most of our Platinum two-handed rods compliments and rewards a compact and relaxed casting stroke where less is more!

Beulah on Beulah Platinum Switch Rods

The recent Switch Fly Rod movement has taken the fly fishing industry by storm. As the first company to successfully market a full line of Switch Fly Rods, it is with great pride we are ready to launch the next evolution we call our Beulah Platinum Switch rods. We have five years of Switch rod production under our belt with literally thousands of hours logged fishing and spent talking with shop owners, guides and customers about Switch fly rods. While creating Platinum Switch rods, the goals were simple: design a Switch rod series dialed into specific fishing situations,  create rods that are extremely light in hand with crisp, fast recovering actions, and do it with the attention to detail and terrific value that Beulah is known for.

The Beulah Platinum Switch rods are constructed using the same all carbon scrim materials and techniques as seen in our Platinum Spey rods. A blend of high modulus graphite helps tailor the action while at the same time retaining the crisp recovery people have come to love in the Platinum series. This construction allows us to create rods with either a traditional, regressed flex pattern, or a progressive, fast action rod without losing sensitivity through out the blank. The result is a smooth, responsive rod that snaps back with a crisp recovery regardless of the rods flex pattern.

Each Beulah Platinum Switch rod has been uniquely designed to match its specific fishing application. As our Platinum Switch rods step up in size from 10’5wt, 10’4” 6wt, and 10’8” 7wt to 11’8wt, the action migrates down the blank with each size jump. Starting with our 10’ 5wt Switch rod with its progressive crisp action towards the tip and ending with our 11’8wt with a regressed traditional action flexing in the lower third of the rod.

With four sizes to choose from the Beulah Platinum Switch rod series has something for everyone.

Beulah on Beulah

Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides, fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create high performance products that could compete with anything on the market and offer them at a fair price. Judging by the response, we have done just that and more.

From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish, even if if was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing situation, we started with a full range of fly rods including single hand, salt, spey and a complete line of original switch rods. These are now considered our Classic Series, a proven line of rods that are engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and appearance.

When our switch rods hit the market there was little to nothing available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations, so we took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly line to go with it.

As graphite technology took the leap to all-carbon scrim, Beulah Fly Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum Series. What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed into a full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response to our initial Platinum spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on our hands.

Our marketing plan has always been based around true glass-roots efforts and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you we get to do what we love to do. We'll never lose sight of that fact. Here's to the next five years...
