Leland on the Beulah Classic 10’6” 8/9wt Switch Rod
A swing-caught winter steelhead is one of the greatest prizes in North American freshwater fly fishing, and for good reason. When waters run high and green, and fish are cold and sluggish,
a lot of things must come together to get a grab. Taking a good look at the Beulah Classic 10’6” 8/9 Switch rod is one of the first steps in finding a
hot and heavy winter chromer fresh from the Pacific.
Leland on Specifications
In Oregon in the winter you usually have to
get deep. This means throwing junk, sometimes over twenty grains per foot of it, and that’s what the Beulah Classic 8/9106 Switch Rod, with a 450 grain short-head Skagit, does best. For
dredging narrow slots with negligible backcasting room, this rod sets the standard. But this stable, powerful switch rod
isn’t a one-trick pony. In windy conditions like you’ll find during an afternoon on the Deschutes, the Beulah Classic Switch 10’6” 8/9 will
punch casts as far as you need, provided you rig it with a great-casting Scandi head in the 420 grain vicinity. What’s more, the progressive action on this powerful switch rod also means
you can two-hand overhead fish the surf for staging anadromous species with a short-head single-hand line like the Rio Outbound 9wt.

Leland on Beulah Switch Rods
Switch rods are a relatively new phenomenon in fly fishing, and for this we have to thank, in large part, Beulah Fly Rods. Beulah was the first company to manufacture and market a full line of switch rods, way back in 2005.
Today, Beulah’s commitment to switch rods is just as strong. In the
smaller line weights, these compact two handed fly rods enable anglers
to fish trout on the swing – the original way to trout fish, after
dapping – while the larger line weights offer anglers all the benefits
of spey rods, in tighter quarters or on smaller water. Developed
on the legendary rivers of southern and central Oregon – Rogue,
Deschutes, Metolius, Williamson – Beulah switch rods are
function-forward and task-specific.
Why fish a switch rod? To cover more water, and more water types, with less effort. Though
Beulah switch rods can be used with one hand or two, with indicators or
dries, here at Leland we like to think of them as compact spey rods,
and we get the greatest satisfaction out of fishing the swing with
these capable two handers. Aesthetically flawless, and fitted with the finest components, Beulah switch rods will enrich any day on the water.
Leland on Beulah
Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.
Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.
Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.

Beulah on Beulah
Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides, fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create high performance products that could compete with anything on the market and offer them at a fair price. Judging by the response, we have done just that and more.
From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish, even if if was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing situation, we started with a full range of fly rods including single hand, salt, spey and a complete line of original switch rods. These are now considered our Classic Series, a proven line of rods that are engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and appearance.
When our switch rods hit the market there was little to nothing available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations, so we took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly line to go with it.
As graphite technology took the leap to all-carbon scrim, Beulah Fly Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum Series. What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed into a full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response to our initial Platinum spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on our hands.
Our marketing plan has always been based around true glass-roots efforts and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you we get to do what we love to do. We'll never lose sight of that fact. Here's to the next five years...
