Leland on Cloudveil
Relative newcomers to the world of outdoors
clothing, Cloudveil quickly made a niche for themselves not seen by
others by using the phrase "dry does not have to be stiff"! Almost 10
years back, fellow ski and climbing buddies and soon to be founders,
Stephan Sullivan and Brian Cousins were introduced to products made
from Schoeller soft shell fabric. This fabric turned out to be not only
warm but also waterproof, stretchable, and breathable. Imagine the
possibilities! Imagine the movement you can get without the stiffness
associated with the extremely popular waterproof materials we are all
too familiar with.
Living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Sullivan and Cousins having worked
in the same retail store knew outdoor clothing. When they came upon
Schoeller soft shell they knew they had to make their move. So they
purchased the material, made some garments and the rest is history. Their
location in Jackson gave them the prefect playground to test their
products. What better grounds for testing where the mountains and
rivers are just minutes away from your office? Today they continue to
ski and climb and have applied what they've learned to the fly fishing
industry. Their success now includes innovative technical apparel for
you the angler. We can't think of a better river than the Snake to test
fly fishing apparel, can you? We were so impressed with their initial
products that we brought them in before anybody else in the industry.
We know you'll be impressed too!
Cloudveil on Cloudveil
"Talk about a gift that keeps on giving. When
Stephen Sullivan received a pair of pants as a gift, he and friend
Brian Cousins saw an entrepreneurial opportunity. Working at the same
outdoor retail shop and sharing a passion for skiing and climbing, the
friends banked on their belief that the pants' comfortable, lightweight
Schoeller fabric would be the next big thing in active outdoor apparel.
In 1997, they founded Cloudveil, purchasing the fabric from Schoeller
Textile USA and starting a new category of stretch woven fabric known
as "soft shell."
Cloudveil's location among the mountains surrounding Jackson,
Wyoming presented some unique circumstances. Without many resources
nearby, the company had to outsource distribution and pattern making.
Cousins and Sullivan have no plans to relocate Cloudveil, however -
product development couldn't get any better where lifts, trails and
lakes are minutes away from the office. "We can have a sample out the
door and tested the same day," Sullivan explains. "That's something the
bigger companies just can't do.
